Background of the study
Urban sprawl is a widespread phenomenon that leads to significant changes in land use patterns, often at the expense of natural landscapes. In Ikot Ekpene, rapid expansion of urban areas has transformed agricultural and forested lands into residential and commercial zones. Recent studies (Anyanwu, 2023; Eno, 2024) indicate that urban sprawl results in fragmented habitats, increased traffic congestion, and loss of open spaces. This study examines the evolution of urban sprawl in Ikot Ekpene, analyzing the drivers behind land use changes such as population growth, economic development, and inadequate urban planning. It further explores the environmental and social implications of such transformations, including the degradation of ecosystems and reduced quality of life. By integrating remote sensing data with socio-economic analysis, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how urban sprawl reshapes the landscape and to propose sustainable urban planning strategies (Anyanwu, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Urban sprawl in Ikot Ekpene has led to dramatic changes in land use, resulting in environmental degradation and loss of green spaces. The rapid conversion of natural lands into urban infrastructure is not adequately controlled by current planning policies. This uncontrolled expansion has disrupted ecological balance, increased infrastructural pressures, and degraded residents’ quality of life. This study seeks to quantify the extent of land use change due to urban sprawl and propose measures to promote sustainable urban development (Eno, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the extent of land use changes due to urban sprawl.
To evaluate the environmental impacts of these changes.
To recommend sustainable urban planning interventions.
Research questions:
How has urban sprawl altered land use patterns?
What environmental impacts result from these changes?
What planning strategies can mitigate the negative effects?
Research Hypotheses:
Urban sprawl significantly alters natural land use.
Loss of green spaces is directly linked to urban expansion.
Sustainable planning can curb adverse environmental impacts.
Significance of the study
The study will provide critical insights into the relationship between urban sprawl and land use changes, guiding policymakers in Akwa Ibom State toward sustainable urban development practices that balance growth with environmental preservation (Anyanwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of urban sprawl on land use change in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Urban Sprawl: The uncontrolled expansion of urban areas (Eno, 2024).
Land Use Change: The transformation of natural landscapes into developed areas (Anyanwu, 2023).
Sustainable Urban Planning: Urban development that meets current needs without compromising future generations (Eno, 2024).
